Guide to listening to the latest work by Roger Waters

with Marco Lenzi

Saturday, December 9th, at 6:00 PM, in Livorno, at Symphony Record Shop, Piazza Cavour, 23, Marco Lenzi, Livornese musician and musicologist, will guide us in listening to “The Dark Side of the Moon – Redux“, the latest work by Roger Waters, historic bassist of Pink Floyd. With Lenzi, Stefano Lucarelli and Massimo Volpi of the Only Music Can Save Us Association.

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux is: it’s been 50 years since the Pink Floyd album was considered a masterpiece. There is no more impartial, inflexible, unassailable judge than time. And today, just like half a century ago, the judgment, unanimous, hasn’t changed. So, what’s the reason for a new version?

The Dark Side of the Moon was the eighth studio album by Pink Floyd (Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright); it was released on March 1st, 1973, in the United States by Capitol Records and on the 16th of the same month in the United Kingdom by Harvest Records.

When the album was released, Waters was 29 years old (that year, the Vietnam War ended and the first global financial crisis after the post-war economic boom began). Today, Waters is one of the world’s most successful solo artists but also one of the most talked-about, on one hand for cutting ties with the other historic members of Pink Floyd, on the other hand due to some provocative statements that have often placed him at the center of criticism.

Waters’ Redux version doesn’t come at all as an attempt to improve an already perfect album but as an attempt to personalize as much as possible a work that the author himself feels entirely his own. To change and update such a memorable album, the English artist understands that the only viable path is a dry version, much more stripped-down than that of Comfortably Numb 2022, which had already given a first taste of the new sounds sought by Waters.

The album listening will take place thanks to the collaboration with Albizzati Hi-Fi, which will provide one of its beautiful sound systems.
