Discovering the Goldoni Theater in Livorno

A tale of beauty and resilience in the heart of Livorno

The timeless beauty of a nineteenth-century theater that survived the war

In the heart of Livorno, just a few steps from Piazza Cavour and Fosso Reale, a cultural gem awaits to share its extraordinary history with you: the Teatro Goldoni. The largest and most prestigious theater in the city, the only one among the many historic theaters in Livorno to have survived the bombings of the Second World War.

Started in 1843 and completed in 1847, during a historical period when Livorno was one of the most culturally vibrant and active cities in Italy – so much so that it earned the nickname “city of theaters” – the Goldoni was born at the initiative of the Lorraine Grand Dukes to compete in efficiency and beauty with the most important national stages of the time.

The project, funded by impresarios Francesco and Alessandro Caporali, was entrusted to the talent of the young Livornese architect Giuseppe Cappellini, who created the elegant neoclassical structure that you can admire today. The sober facade, characterized by a cozy carriage entrance and two orders of rounded arches supporting a wide triangular pediment, contrasts with the richness of the interiors that, with stairs, columns, and spacious halls, open onto a finely decorated elliptical auditorium.

Facing the auditorium are 115 boxes arranged on 4 levels around the grand Royal Box, overshadowed by a large gallery positioned over 26 meters above the ground, all topped by an extraordinary transparent crystal roof, supported by iron beams, created to allow daytime performances. Such a daring and advanced structure has rightfully become part of the architectural history of iron and glass in Italy.

Today, after almost two centuries of successes, declines, and rebirths, following the complex restoration carried out in 2004 by the Livorno Municipal Administration, the Teatro Goldoni has once again become one of the most beautiful, active, and popular performance venues in all of Tuscany.

So, if you happen to be in Livorno, don’t miss the opportunity to attend one of the many events and shows offered by its rich program. It is surely the best way to fully enjoy the beauty and charm of this marvelous structure.
