Livorno / What to do and see / The Fortezza Vecchia
Capture the historical soul of Livorno
When you cross the threshold of the Fortezza Vecchia, sister of the younger Fortezza Nuova, you will be transported back in time, exactly to the place where the first nucleus of the city originated and developed. A true treasure trove of hidden treasures, this architectural gem, built in the 16th century on the orders of Cosimo I De’ Medici, is much more than a simple military fortification. We are facing the true guardian of Livorno’s roots.
The red massive walls, the imposing bastions rising from the sea, the towers, the coats of arms, the inscriptions and the marble details of this Renaissance artwork, in fact, tell a story of grandeur and resistance, revealing the genius and deeds of the men who shared its history.
From the top of its walls, you can also enjoy a breathtaking panorama. You will look out over Livorno and its port from a unique perspective, while the Tyrrhenian Sea stretches out towards the horizon, blending into the blue sky.
Built starting from 1519 based on the design of one of the most renowned military architects of the time, Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, the Fortezza Vecchia is characterized by an asymmetrical structure that includes three large bastions: the Ampolletta facing the city, the Canaviglia facing the port, and the Capitana facing northeast.
The interior structure is a true snapshot of the city’s history: it includes, and they are still visible, the remains of the square-based medieval tower (around 1077) that characterized the first port of Livorno, the Mastio di Matilde (around 1241), and the fortified walls of the ancient Quadratura dei Pisani (around 1377). Therefore, from Portus Pisanus to the Medici, from the House of Lorraine to Napoleon’s occupations, from the Risorgimento movements to the deep scars inflicted by World War II, the Fortezza Vecchia has accompanied Livorno and its inhabitants from all eras, communicating to them the beloved certainty of a constant reference point.
Today the Old Fortress is not just a monument but, true to its nature, continues to actively accompany the life of the city as a stage for numerous events. So plan a thorough visit, because during your stay you might have the chance to attend one of the many concerts, performances and cultural initiatives that make this place still vibrant and engaging.
