The Zenòbito Tower

A bulwark made of lava stone

The ancient sentinel of Capraia

If you want to explore a place where nature and history blend in a unique way, the Tower of Zenòbito will not disappoint you. This ancient Genoese bulwark, built in 1545, is one of the four coastal fortifications of Capraia used to signal possible pirate raids. Its name comes from an ancient monastery or “cenobio” that was located nearby during the Early Middle Ages, and which also gave its name to the nearby Zenòbito Plain.

Immersed in the pristine nature of a volcanic promontory, this circular tower made of lava stone stands imposingly over the breathtaking Cala Rossa, offering breathtaking views of the crystal-clear surrounding sea. Its structure is developed on three levels, with an elevated entrance, a clever stratagem for better defense against enemies, and a mezzanine that dominates the main hall, embellished with a large red stone fireplace.

To reach it, you can venture along two paths: the Zenòbito Path, a coastal route that winds through rich vegetation, or the internal path that passes through the Monte Arpagna Semaphore, which offers an even more wild and immersive experience. Both paths, which still require some physical effort, invite you to discover the island in all its beauty, far from conventional tourist routes.
