A preserved corner of paradise

Hiking lovers and travelers looking for a refuge away from everyday chaos, come and experience Capraia, the wildest and most natural of the Tuscan Islands. Easily reachable with a daily ferry from the Port Mediceo in Livorno, this paradisiac island awaits you just 30 km northwest of Elba and close to Corsica, ready to offer you a total immersion in its nature. Dominated by peaks reaching 445 meters in height, Capraia will offer you a varied and breathtaking landscape, where time seems to have stopped. The crystal-clear blue sea washes against rugged coastlines, while the hinterland unveils a sanctuary of tranquility, making you feel part of a reigning nature.

Explore the green soul of Capraia

Formed by the action of two volcanic eruptions, Capraia stands out from the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago due to its geological formation. Its cliffs overlooking the sea, rocks of a thousand colors, and lush Mediterranean vegetation offer a natural spectacle that captures both the eye and the soul. Despite its small size, the island surprises with an incredible environmental and landscape diversity that it has to offer. Crossed by only one road that connects the port to the picturesque village, the island has an ancient history, marked in the past by the presence of a penal colony that has contributed to preserving its environmental integrity and rich natural heritage. From challenging trails for experienced hikers to peaceful walks for nature lovers, the paths of Capraia, almost all well marked and immersed in the scents of the Mediterranean scrubland, will offer you a succession of suggestive views and breathtaking panoramas towards nearby Corsica.

Enjoy its peasant tradition

Through its paths, Capraia reveals not only its history but also its rural traditions. On one side the ancient watchtowers, the fortifications, the remains of the penal colony, on the other the natural places such as the Stagnone, the only natural lake in the Tuscan Archipelago, or the Roman settlement of Piano, now converted to winemaking, or the palmenti, ancient tanks carved into the rock in which the grape clusters were pressed. Among myrtle bushes, sea rockrose and strawflower, there are indeed numerous crops and peasant activities restored to their ancient splendor along the terraces today, from vineyards to olive groves, from vegetables to capers and pistachios and saffron cultivation to the breeding of goats, which gives us delicious cheeses, and beekeeping, which produces one of Tuscany’s most appreciated wildflower honey.
